just a couple of pics of the new fuel pump bracket we made at work, the standard vauxhall one is always really rusted and flimsy so we knocked this up in about 10 minutes, just need to line it up under the car and then respray it.

Good stuff, I`m suprised its still in one piece lol are you getting the rear bumper too ?
No not getting the rear bumper just gonna change the front bumper for this one, change the bonnet and that will be it. i reckon the car will look fine then.
Just need to sort the sound system and gauges, ive got a 2gb ipod thats ready to go in so i can ditch the H/U, just need to sort my outside air temp, voltage and amps gauges, Ive got the oil pressure and oil temp gauge.
Mwuahahahaha its going into the bodyshop tomorrow to be refreshed and resprayed cheers to ROYBACER for the bumper :)

How much would you want to get them and send them (if they are in perfect i mean with all plugs etc)?
Sorry to jump the thread
Well the bumper is now being worked on as we speak, I am doing most of the prep work myself to keep the costs down as the bumper is being completley overhauled, that means all the paint is coming off down to the plastic before its resprayed and all damage repaired, Now i am going to amuse myself as this could get rather costly so i want to see just how much you can spend on a bumper.
Dicky at the bodyshop said that if i was to get him to do the job start to finish i was looking at a minimum of 400 squid.
breaking that down its 25 notes per hour labour.
6 hours sanding time to get it all back to plastic = 150 quid
4 hours fibreglassing and sanding time = 100 quid
6 hours painting time (stopping,priming,flatting,painting,polishing) = 150quid.
So lets see what i can spend on just a front bumper lol, so far its 25 notes for the bumper, 30 for all the fibreglass and filler and 10 for all the various grits of sandpaper.
So far thats 65 english notes.
Little update, first we start with this
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/8861/230120071405iy.jpg
And after an hour i am done for the night, just needs going over with a finer grade paper and then they are ready for paint, I am doing the inserts black as i think they look better as they break the colour of the car up.
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/9960/230120071414um.jpg
I will do the splitter tomorrow lunchtime, i have got to get that back to fibreglass before paint and i have thursday afternoon off to get the bumper itself sorted.
Make sure you tell your painter not to bake the splitter or the bumper if your doing fibreglass repairs on it.
Took the so called professional who painted the bumpers on mine, three attempts to get them right, because they baked them.
Dont worry Tom this guy is as professional as it gets, He is a coachworks Official MG restorer and never cuts corners, only problem is it makes him bloody expensive, worth it in the end though lol.
Ive got a heck of a lot of repair works on that bumper its as battered as it gets.

never knew they did a 16v on an e reg, thought they started on a f reg, all the same very nice, i used to have them skirts on my astra.
lol its not an E reg thats Mels private plate, we need to transfer it over to her new car, the astra is actually a G reg
Tookthe car out for her first run today and it was great, changed the furl filter and spark plugs, filled it with petrol and off i went.
It seems to be running fine at the moment.
Next thing now is the sound system.
It already has a kenwood 12@ sub and 600w SPL-X amp in it, I have got some JBL GT series 6x9's and a 2gb Ipod with all the leads to link it to the amp so i can get rid of the headunit, now all i need is some front speakers and i am sorted
astravanmk2
25-01-2007, 10:54 PM
that front bumper looks good not seen another like it
Got the Ipod in today, was a fairly simple process there is already a 12" Kenwood sub and 600w 4 channel amp in the boot aswell as JBL GT 6x9's on the parcel shelf.
So front end we had this, the 2 RCA leads
http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/5941/27012007153uc6.jpg
So here are the parts we need, A small phone cradle, as you can see i had to cut one of the supports off as it was in the way of the Ipod link lead
http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/1953/27012007154cx9.jpg
This is the Ipod link lead, it plugs into the headfone socket on the Ipod and the other end is RCA.
http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/8172/27012007155cw2.jpg
1 ground loop isolator so i dont get any background noise.
http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/4489/27012007156jy7.jpg
2 male to 1 female RCA splitters as its a 4 channel amp.
http://img129.imageshack.us/img129/8171/27012007157oz2.jpg
2 male/male adaptors as the splitters have male connections and so do the RCA leads.
http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/3521/27012007158fd9.jpg
Any finally the heart of the system, the 2gb Ipod nano.
http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/2861/27012007159dz0.jpg
Step 1 was to join the male/male adaptors to the RCA leads
http://img129.imageshack.us/img129/8766/27012007160xh9.jpg
This allows the splitters to be connected in situ
http://img129.imageshack.us/img129/8456/27012007161jd0.jpg
Next step was the ground loop isolator, all of this will be tucked away behind the dash.
http://img129.imageshack.us/img129/4644/27012007162hx1.jpg
And finally the Ipod link lead can be joined to this, all of this ends in one little headfone stereo jack :applause:
http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/7823/27012007163kq8.jpg
And the end result is this, one dash mounted Ipod so no headunit, the sound quality is really good and i dont have to worry about skipping cd's or swapping them.
http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/6269/27012007164jh8.jpg
http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/337/27012007165eg7.jpg
And this is it with the Ipod removed. I just wired the remote from the amp to the switched live of the car so it turns on straight with the ignition, All i need to do now is make a blanking plate for the dash and thats it job done.

I'd suggest fitting a standard headunit in the hole, no need to wire it up, but it'll look retro. ;)
Ian.
i am going to fit some gauges there at a later date so headunit is a nono lol
Got a few more bits done today not much though due to freezing weather, made the blanking plate for the headunit apeture and cleaned the car.
my nice new blanking plate.
http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/3909/28012007168ty3.jpg
The car after she was cleaned, i didnt bother polishing her as its to cold round here.
http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/2519/28012007170ub6.jpg
The exhaust was filthy so i decided to give that a going over aswell this is the exhaust before.
http://img112.imageshack.us/img112/8283/28012007169kx7.jpg
And this is after the Autosol was applied.
http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/5977/28012007172bf8.jpg
And this is the state of the engine bay at the moment, i am in the middle of repainting the plugcover.

Had another washing session today, still havent polished it yet as its a bit to cold really, i want to wait until the weather warms up a bit. The water is still beading nicely so its not to bad atm.
I also used a brillo pad on the tailpipes and then some autosol, they seem to have come up really nice :)

i wouldn't bother putting that on the GTE with digi dash, no need!
Digidash is coming out ;), I have never been that keen on them, so i am making a custom dash to go in its place.

Not a hint of moss anywhere!
Not a hint of moss anywhere!
Ummm random lol.
BanburyGTEcab, yours can look good to fella, just needs time, money and willpower :)
Small update.
Got a few new bits for the GTE, the indicator stalk had stopped working so i had no indicators, if i put my headlights on the main beam would come on so i only had dipped beam. Got another stalk from the scrappies and all is now fine.
Also you all may remember the whale tail that used to be on the boot, Well that had killed the gas struts so i finally got round to sorting them, Again taken from a corsa at the local scrappies.
The other new toy is a Pro-sound electronic crossover with built in line driver. The line driver is important as i have no headunit, just and Ipod.
The problem is that an average headunit has an out put voltage of 4.4v in the RCA connections, The Ipod only has a 1.8v output in the headphone jack, This causes a lot of distortion as the amp starts to get a clipped signal.
The way to solve this is with a line driver, it boosts the RCA voltage signal anywhere from 2v up to 6.8v, this allows me to match the Ipod to the Amp

Ooooh... that's interesting - are Corsa ones a direct swap and the same length?
Ian.
Yep exactly the same length as the GTE ones and the same fitment, They are really strong aswell, I can have the boot half open and it still goes up instead of down :)
Over the next few months i shall mostly be sorting this mess out :)

LOL - I thought it looked cleaner than mine at the Westerham meet last weekend, G!
Think you'll shame me into taking mine to bits and sorting it out sometime.
Ian.
Lol, its not to bad there is just lots of wiring that needs tidying up and a few bits that need painting.
I have got a patch of surface rust behind the drivers side turret aswell that needs sorting before it goes through.

Mr G, did you chew a hole in the soundproofing on the bulkhead? Looks very much like it!:D
LMAO i needed somewhere to mount the filter, the plan is to take it all out at a later date, loosing enthusiasm with the car now, went into town earlier today and parked behind a 4x4. noticed this afternoon when i fitted the new ignition coil that they reversed into the GTE, got a nice big scuff mark on the bonnet now with a dent.
I have always had a plan to get a corsa and stick the XE in that, now i am starting to think about it a lot more.
The afor mentioned new coil.

And the nice big scuff to add to my list of things that **** me off about my car.

Don't give up, you've got a one off car there, be a shame to let some wally in a Chelsea tractor spoil it for you.
You might be able to buff that out.
Ian.
I tried to buff it out, the scratch is right down to the primer, it may come out with a machine polish but it wont come out by hand.
